You won’t ever have a problem finding Salt & Straw because all you have to do is follow the long line that is constantly protruding out of the door! Please don’t think that this only applies to peak hours like evenings and weekends because it’s all day everyday and they close at 11pm! Pretty much every location has this same rule.
I was intrigued by this farm to table ice cream concept, so I had to give it a try. I was disappointed to find out that they only offer 2 Vegan flavors: Toasted Coconut with Candied Macadamia Nuts and a berry sorbet. They had a spicy peanut butter flavor too that was very hot and not very tasty at all, so I forget the exact name, but it was only for the June menu anyway. The coconut flavored ice cream was delicious and extremely decadent. However, it wasn’t enough to tempt me to make multiple visits to Salt & Straw. When my sister wanted to go again (non-Vegan) I helped myself to a generous serving of kombucha on tap instead of getting the same flavor. The wafting smell of freshly made waffle cones will infiltrate your nostrils the moment you get close to the shop. But be aware that they are not Vegan. However, they do have equally delicious Vegan sugar cones, if you want to go all out and ditch the cup.
I ordered my scoop in a cup but the server forgot and put it in a sugar cone, then when reminded, gave me an extra scoop and plopped the almost full cone on top of it! Needless to say, I was appalled but ate the entire thing only because I didn’t want to appear ungrateful (wink wink)…Either way, if you want to try something new and enjoy yet another Portland original culinary delight, then grab a book or good company and head over to Salt & Straw for a decadent treat that’s worth the wait.
