I have visited Vegan Mundo twice. As a Vegan living in Montclair, it’s really nice to have a place to go where everything on the menu is an option and not have to fuss with asking the waiter to ask the chef for Vegan options. However, I wasn’t thrilled with the menu selection at Mundo Vegan as I felt it to be rather mundane as far as Vegan food is concerned. The price point is also a bit high. Rice and beans are something I prepare at home as a Vegan. The lasagna is pretty good and the appetizers such as the hummus are good too, but as I said before, not terribly hard to make on my own for a lot less.
Some would argue that the ambiance might make it worth the little extra price, but I was disappointed to find that Mundo Vegan doesn’t really strive to create one. It’s very dark and washed out with minimal art. Vegan living, to me, screams color, vibrance, and of course, colorful foods from the earth. It’s my hope that they will cultivate some of these elements into the atmosphere to inspire diners. But of course, food is really the crux of why I went and I will say, everything was prepared nicely and I love that they offer so many organic, non-GMO, cruelty-free, and gluten-free options. I think it is wonderful to have healthy alternatives on the local restaurant mecca of downtown Montclair. The service is also great, as the waiters are very attentive and willing to answer any questions about the menu. I commend Mundo Vegan for making the concept more palatable to the mainstream Montclair diners. I just hope that they will make the space a bit more colorful and iniviting and get more creative with the menu selections. I look forward to seeing them grow and become a staple on Church Street.
